How To Give It To God

Mar 27, 2012, Written by Sue Miley

Giving it to God is a concept that comes up for me on a daily basis in all facets of my work and life.  In just the past week, I have prayed for God to get me out of the way or to take something from me.  Here are a couple of examples:

  • my daughter is driving back to school, I know worrying doesn’t help, Lord please keep her safe.
  • I put an offer on new space for my office, Lord only let it come through if it is your will.
  • Lord, we still need more help at the office, should we add more resources.
  • my throat is killing me and I have gone to the doctor, can you please heal me and help me to not worry it is something worse

I have hit on safety, health, work, and stewardship all in the 5 seconds it took me to come up with the list off of the top of my head.  These are all things I can worry or obsess over and have to work really hard to not control myself and to give to God and let Him work through me if He so chooses.

So, I didn’t text my daughter 10 times on her way home to see how she was doing, find out how far she was, or cause her an accident to constantly look at my texts.

Instead, I wrote this post on my counseling blog about how to give it to God, at least from my perspective:

When Ink Hits Paper: Giving it to God

So I am writing in my journal this morning. Well actually I was writing to God. That is what I do. And actually, I was writing to God about how I haven’t written to him as often lately as I used to.

Well let me start from the beginning. I had a new client yesterday who obviously was in a difficult place. I was talking about moving closer to God, because as you may have read in a previous post What To Do When You Don’t Know What to Do, is I always feel I just need to move closer to God.

I am telling the client about this. That God loves him and that He wants to help us carry our burdens. You know, all of the standard God talk. And he was nodding his head, but I could tell he is thinking, “Okay all this sounds good, but how do I actually do it?”

And haven’t you ever had that same thought. Just give it to God….okay, how? Where is the line I need to stand in? Is there a “How to” video on You Tube?

I am not good about giving things up. It’s the control freak in me. But I do find when my life is tangled, and I just dont know, if I give it ALL up, it work the tangles out. And then I wonder. “Why did I wait so long?”

    Hi Sue,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. God’s word has a lot to say bout not living in fear, yet why is it so easy to become fearful. 2 TIM 1:7 says “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
