A Gift We Take For Granted

Never Stop Learning

When I was in high school, I was the one who never wanted to go to school. Maybe it was because I was homeschooled until high school. Maybe it was because I didn’t like a lot of the people I had to be around.

But the main reason I remember was that I didn’t want to learn or do homework. I didn’t want to really challenge myself, I just wanted everything to be easy.

“But learning is FUN!”, my Dad would say.

I didn’t think it was.
I dreaded it.
I avoided it whenever possible.
I even tried to act sick some days in an effort to stay home.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and now I look back at how ridiculous that was.

It is wonderful to have knowledge and gain more understanding.

God wants us to continuously gain knowledge and wisdom.

It’s healthy for us to train our brains, much like when we train our muscles through exercise, by learning new and challenging skills or ideas on a regular basis.

“Embracing a new activity that also forces you to think and learn and requires ongoing practice can be one of the best ways to keep the brain healthy.”

– Dr. John N. Morris (source)

Being a disciple and follower of Christ in itself means that we should continuously seek new wisdom and knowledge throughout our lives.

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance…”

Proverbs 1:5

Much of this should be studying God’s word, but also challenging ourselves outside of that in the other things we choose to do. This can be a new hobby, a new skill for work / your resume, and more.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

Colossians 3:16

Many things are constantly changing around us as well, which may force us to learn new things, but this can feel like a burden and wear us down.

Find something new that you WANT to learn instead of something you are required to learn. This will make the process much more enjoyable and rewarding.

This is a vital part of maintaining your health, both physical and spiritual. I encourage you to never stop learning and challenge yourself to seek out new knowledge every day.

Try to find joy in learning. It is a gift from the Lord that should not be taken for granted!

“An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.”

Proverbs 18:15
