Should We Share Our Faith In Our Business?

Aug 19, 2013, Written by Sue Miley

Many Christians in business struggle with if and when they should share their faith in their business.  Some of the concerns are as follows:

Am I limiting my potential customer base if people think I only target Christians?

People have a bad taste in their mouths for Christian businesses, will people think I am like some of those who represented Christ poorly?

What if I represent Christ poorly?

Will I get backlash from people if I share my faith or Christian perspective?

Should We Share Our Faith?

I don’t believe that God calls everyone to have a business that is branded Christian or that only serves Christian customers.  He definitely doesn’t.  There are many strong believers who sell a product they believe in to whomever is interested in buying it.

But I do believe that God does call all believers to be open about their faith.  There is too much in scripture about us….

…being a city on a hill

…shining our lights on Christ

…making disciples of all nations

and pointing others to Jesus.

In analyzing the constant dissonance that people share about sharing their faith either personally, or as a business, I can’t help believing that this dissonance is NOT created by God.

He wouldn’t want us to hide our thoughts and our feelings.

He also doesn’t need us to actively “share” or “do” as if checking a tactic off the list.

Ultimately, God uses us to reach others.  It is His work, not ours.

We just need to be useable.

We need to be open to Him working through us.

What Does The Tension Mean?

However, if you are feeling tension, meaning that you desire to share but are worried about offending potential customers, what do you do?

What do you think God would want you to do?

You may have the argument that God wants us to come along side of our customers.  We can be a light just by “being” a good Christian.  And this is true.

But if this is His plan for you in particular, I am not sure you would be feeling the pressure to share to begin with.

Where does that feeling  of dissonance come from?

I don’t believe that Satan is pushing you to want to share.  That feeling you have that you want to share but are scared, that is because your faith wants out in the open.  That is because you love God and want to share it with the world.  That feeling that you want to share but are scared, is because you know deep down that others deserve to know your God and you know it….they just may not know it yet.

Planting the seed that Jesus is the way, may lose you a customer or two, but if it is the seed that one day sprouts into faith and salvation for anyone out there who may have heard, it is worth it.  It is what we are here for.  It is truly glorifying God.

What If You Don’t Have Any Dissonance?

If you have no dissonance, then God may be planning to use you in a different way and to me that is perfectly in line with following God’s will.

But if you are constantly struggling with how much of your faith you should share, when or where is it appropriate, will it hurt your business efforts……if this is your feelings…..I believe it is the Holy Spirit saying, “This is your purpose.  This is how I want to use you. Let go of your worldly worry of customers and let Me take care of that.”

Sometimes we just need to obey.
