There are tiny moments of pleasure in life. They are usually made up of the simplest of things.
For me it usually involves a setting or space I like. The joy I get sitting on a quiet beach at sunrise or sunset is immeasurable. Moments with a great writing pen in hand and beautiful handcrafted journal produces pleasure and creativity all in one. Sipping on a french pressed cup of a favorite coffee varietal or having a cup of tea in the perfect thin bone china cup produces similar endorphins.
It reminds me that:
* life is short
* pleasurable moments are easily available
* joy doesn’t have to cost money
and I don’t take the time or pay attention to the particulars much these days…thus missing out on the simple pleasures all around.
It also makes me miss out on giving God the gratitude He deserves, as these moments are gifts from Him.
Realizing this, I wanted to do something about it. I decided to make a longer list of some of these favorite moments. I wrote out all of the special places that make me happy just being in them. Then I listed my favorite activities, the ones that don’t require a lot of time or money, but give me a secret feeling of pleasure in their simplicity. Lastly, but not least, I wrote out people who I love being with. You know the ones that you can talk about anything in depth with or just sit in silence and still feel their company.
Since life is short and most certainly filled with stuff we have to do and things we have to deal with, I am committing to enjoying one of these places, activities, and/or people at least once a week.
At least.
I hope you will make a similar list. I would love to hear the people and places and activities that make your list.
Who knows, maybe something on your list could be a new favorite to add to my own or someone else reading.
Let’s all share!
Hi Sue,
What a great reminder! This weekend my husband and I and our two friends of over 30 years played the board game “Trouble.” It was the simplest activity but brought us so much joy! We were belly laughing so hard. My husband said, “I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much and so hard.” It was such a great release from the stressors of everyday living. So, I say go play a fun 10 year olds board game!!
Blessings, Melanie
I love games Melanie….you are right, another simple pleasure. We play boggle and scrabble all of the time!
