There is all of this talk about “execution” and as Seth Godin calls it “shipping”. We can have all of the ideas in the world, but if we do not execute, we really have nothing. I think we need to also look at what it means to “execute” and to “ship”. It sounds simple with just one little word. Like it is only one step to complete the thought…..then we go to do it…it is a mountain of steps. Here is what it looks like to me:
Great idea enters my brain.
Develop a step by step action plan to “execute” the idea.
Reviewing action plan to evaluate tools/resources required.
Need technology – doesn’t everything require some form of technology these days.
Decide not to cut corners so invest in the right technology to do the job.
CAN’T MAKE IT WORK
PRAY
Know it is me, NOT the technology.
Wonder how I will ever get up the learning curve…
Email people, twitter for help, call…..
Saved by someone I catch grocery shopping
Get to the next step in making my technology work – SUCCESS
Feel a moment satisfaction and a glimmer of hope that maybe this will work….
“SHIP” step 1 in my action plan
Review all of the other steps and realize the LEARNING CURVE still ahead
PRAY some more…
Remember that all of it is a waste if I don’t EXECUTE AND SHIP
Go to the next step and realize that in addition to EXECUTE AND SHIP
We need to add:
PERSEVERE
If we don’t persevere then all of the work, the investment, and the idea are for nothing. I know when we face new skills we feel like the instructions are written in a foreign language. For you it could be a new technology, for others it may be managing finances, and another it could be figuring out how to hire the right person. It is called progress, learning, and PERSEVERANCE.
I wish I could tell you that there is an easy way. I wish I could tell myself there is an easier way. But, in some things we just need to DO IT. We have to keep trying, keep reading tutorials, ask for help, hire experts and PERSEVERE!
Only then will we “SHIP”.
